A major obstacle to success isn’t a lack of effort. Instead, it’s the many roles we play and the constant distractions competing for our attention. These often make us feel overwhelmed.
One issue that really holds us back is focusing too much on things outside our control.
We worry about external factors, try to control outcomes, and experience emotional ups and downs that leave us exhausted without making progress.
This post is about optimising that focus and showing you how to stay focused on your goals.
Rather than focusing on unpredictable outcomes, you’ll use a simple, step-by-step method to direct your efforts toward meaningful actions.
By defining clear goals, breaking them down, tracking only what matters, and checking results only when needed, you’ll spend less time feeling stuck and more time making progress.

Step 1: Define What Success Means to You
If you are serious about learning how to stay focused on your goals, you need a clear picture of where you’re headed.
Goal setting and defining success is essential. Be specific and measurable, using SMART goal-setting principles.
Get clear on the following:
- Your Ultimate Goal: What exactly are you aiming for? Is it losing 10kg, landing five new clients, or completing a project by a certain date?
- Timeframe: How much time will you give yourself? Is it 12 weeks, six months, or one year?
- Current Reality: Where are you starting from? Are you beginning from scratch or already on your way?
Your ultimate goal serves as a lag indicator. It represents an external result influenced by outside factors.

But the real magic of this process lies in becoming the person who takes the actions necessary for success.
These daily actions—your lead indicators—are what will push you toward your goal (we’ll get to these actions in step 3).
Step 2: Break the Ultimate Goal Down into Milestones
Big goals can feel overwhelming. The key is to break them down into smaller, more manageable milestones that feel achievable. For more on this, check out my annual planning post.
Each milestone acts as a mini-goal, helping you stay on track and build momentum.
There’s no need to overdo this; a simple one-sentence statement for each milestone will do.
For example, if your goal is to lose 10kg in 10 weeks, break it down into weekly milestones of 1kg per week.
This automatically builds in reflection points (coming up in step 4) and will give you 10 weekly check-in opportunities to keep you on track.
This approach helps you visualise the journey ahead without getting bogged down by too many details. It keeps you motivated and reinforces that progress is happening—even if it’s slow.
Step 3: Identify the Actions That Will Get You to Milestone One
Now, think about the specific actions you need to take to reach the first milestone.
Don’t overthink it. It doesn’t need to be perfect. The goal is to start and take action toward your goal.
What actions are necessary to get you to the first milestone?
For example, if your goal is to lose 1kg this week, your action plan might include sticking to 1,500 calories each day and doing 30 minutes of exercise daily.
For growing your business, you might plan to send five outreach emails per day, and upload and promote one long-form piece of content by COB Thursday each week.
These actions (your lead indicators) should be:
- Actionable: You can actually do them.
- Clear: No guesswork about what needs to happen.
- Measurable: You can track progress objectively.
By focusing on the inputs within your control, rather than external results, you stay in the driver’s seat and ensure progress.

Step 4: Do the Work
This is where most people stumble—not because they lack knowledge, but because they don’t follow through.
If you tell yourself you know how to stay focused on your goal, but don’t find a way to maintain focus, you will not make progress.
Whatever timeframe you’ve set—whether it’s a day, a week, or a month—you have already decided what needs to be done. Now, it’s time to roll up your sleeves, and do the work.
Trust that there’s a future point where you’ll measure external results and check your progress. Right now, your only job is to follow through and take action.
Stick to your plan and track your actions along the way—good, bad, or indifferent. If you get knocked off course, just get back on track.
Consistency matters more than perfection. Even if you have an off day, what counts is getting back on track and continuing to move forward.
Step 5: Regular Reflection (Completing the Loop)
Tracking your progress is where the magic happens. Without effective milestone tracking, it’s easy to get off course or think you’re doing better than you are.
This is another step that is too easily skipped when trying to master how to stay focused on your goals.
Specific time should already be in your calendar (inline with your milestones – Step 2) at the end of each period.
This is when you look externally and reflect on actual results against expected results.
During the reflection, ask yourself:
- How did I go?: What went well this period? What didn’t?
- What worked?: Was there a specific strategy or behaviour that helped?
- What didn’t work?: What did you try that didn’t yield results?
- What lessons did I learn?: What insights can you apply to the next period?
- What do I know now that I didn’t last week?: Over time, you’ll gather valuable data that will inform your next steps.
Tracking not only keeps you accountable, but it also allows you to adjust and refine your approach.
If something’s not working, change it. If something’s working well, double down on it.

Step 6: Repeat the Cycle
Once you have this information, use it to refine your approach for the next milestone and ensure you maintain consistent progress. Are you still on track?
Do you need to pivot or update any of your future targets based on the lessons you’ve learned?
The cycle is all about consistency. You’ll get better at every aspect as you continue to adjust and improve.
Stay focused on the lead indicators and trust the process—you’ll start to see results, whether you hit your target exactly or get close.
Even going through this cycle once will give you more insight when planning Step 2 than you had at the start of Step 1. Stick with it, and the benefits will compound in ways you can’t yet imagine.

By focusing most of your attention on actions that are fully within your control—and baking in healthy reflection to keep you on track—you start to understand how to stay focused on your goals!
Your results will be what they are, influenced by your actions and the contributions of others.
